The meeting location for Thursday’s 7:30-9:00AM meeting has changed to room 401, near home plate.

Speakers will be Kevin Hathaway (he’s back for an encore!) with the Polk County Attorney’s office. Kevin works the “Indictable Misdemeanor Docket”, which most of our members know is the area under which Criminal Mischief falls. Preston Daniels, current landlord and realtor, is a past mayor of the City of Des Moines and will talk more about our statewide task force on this issue.

This initiative is a direct response to new language in 562A.17.6.  This may be the last meeting on this topic for the next five years, so … don’t miss this meeting if you want to be on top of this issue (which includes understanding the “Rules of Evidence”.

Iowa Landlord Association Switches to Summer Meeting Venue, Time

Des Moines, IA – The Iowa Landlord Association (Des Moines Metro District only) will switch to its summer meeting venue for the June 27 meeting.   The Cub Club, at Principal Park, 1 Line Drive, Des Moines, on the 2nd floor, will host the “ILA Fast-Break Tune-Up” meeting designed to inform Rental Property Owners and Property Managers about changes in the Landlord Tenant Law that become effective July 1, 2013.   The presentation will focus on how to avoid penalties and implement the options for increased legal limits on late fees.

A Breakfast Buffet will be served.  Pre-register at the website (choose “Pay ILA Lunch & Learn Fees) for $18, or at the door for $20.   You may also pre-register (then pay by check at the door) by sending an email to for $18 thru Tuesday night.

There will also be updates on member benefits subsequent to our participation in the National REIA 2013 Mid-Year Leadership Conference, in Pittsburgh, June 20-23.

The July 18 and August 15 (third Thursday) meetings will also be at the Cub Club.     Mark your calendars now!

Bugs.  Rick Krause has agreed to provide a market update for the Central Iowa region, with a spotlight on apartment sales.

Save the dates of May 16 & 17 for our upcoming Spring Conference.   Kick-off is with the City of Des Moines Neighborhood Inspection/Housing Code Enforcement folks offering a 4-hour workshop, from 8:30 – 12:30 at the Police Academy.

We’re still working to arrange for Bill Bronchick to present a preview of what he’ll be covering during the Spring Conference, May 16-17, primarily for ILA members, and May 18-19 for a combined event.

We’re in the final stages of arranging venue and presentations and should have more info by the next meeting.   It’s looking like we’re going to offer some truly outstanding learning opportunities.
