Monthly Archives: August 2013
In business since, 1986, CIC is second to none in the their quality of reports and service. This is why ILA has cut over to them as our exclusive screening service for evictions, criminal checks, and credit reports. Note: Click “Read More” to find an important audio recording.
At our Spring Conference 2013, a few members were willing to offer their thoughts — on the conference, and on the Iowa Landlord Association, in general. We think you’ll agree — they put forth a strong argument for being involved!
Our next meeting is August 15, at the Cub Club at Principal Park. A fabulous breakfast buffet awaits members and guests who arrive by 7:30AM. Members can pre-register and save 10% while guests can attend for $20, for the “check-us-out” first meeting.
Our featured speaker, Kevin Hathaway, is back for an encore (and a better recording). Kevin is an Assistant Polk County Attorney and he will continue his presentation about his responsibilities prosecuting the “Indictable Misdemeanor Docket” in Polk County. This includes upwards of 1,000 cases each year and we had great a Q&A session last month.
“Intentional Damage to Rental Property” as referenced in IC 562A.17.6, and IC 716, is something he has down pat — and we may not do this again for several years! If you think you might one day have a disgruntled resident, who neglects paying the rent and wants to trash the place on the way out (heaven forbid) attend this so you can be aware of the Rules of Evidence a prosecutor must follow, in order to justify bringing charges.
Kevin’s focus, for this meeting, is on the rental property business. Come check us out and enjoy Cub Club atmosphere!

We need your reservation – Today! Text “YES” and head count to 515-255-0675. We will register you. See you Thursday!
Speakers will be Kevin Hathaway (he’s back for an encore!) with the Polk County Attorney’s office. Kevin works the “Indictable Misdemeanor Docket”, which most of our members know is the area under which Criminal Mischief falls. Preston Daniels, current landlord and realtor, is a past mayor of the City of Des Moines and will talk more about our statewide task force on this issue.
This initiative is a direct response to new language in 562A.17.6. This may be the last meeting on this topic for the next five years, so … don’t miss this meeting if you want to be on top of this issue (which includes understanding the “Rules of Evidence”.
The Burlington District sent this meeting info (edited for publication here). ILA does not have chapters — we have “Districts” — the primary group our members join is the statewide group, yet we will fund your local membership up to $40/year (subject to change).
Many of the ILA members are also members of SEIPO. We encourage our members to get all the education you can, in a group setting, where you can both contribute and learn! Many of our members are members of several landlord and REIA groups!
Meetings in the Burlington area are held at the Drake – at 106 Washington, Burlington. ILA members are welcome (Currently, ILA will pay SEIPO dues for you, or provide a credit, to encourage you to be active in this group! This is something we feel is very important for rental property owners in Southeast Iowa. Marc Gillette, current President of SEIPO, serves as a Vice President of ILA and is on the Board of LOI. We don’t see this as “competing” but as “co-creating”. We encourage IaREIA | ILA Landlords and RE Investors members to think likewise!)
