Monthly Archives: September 2012
Our kick-off for our new monthly, evening meetings will be for our multifamily sub-group. This meeting will be primarily for ILA members with a vested interest in multi-family (or a larger number of SFR’s) of 8 units, or more. Guests may attend for $20, to be paid at the door. ILA – IaREIA – TRREIA members all attend for free.
ILA will provide beverages, cold cut sandwiches, and some other snacks.
The focus of this meeting will be:
- the application process (bring yours, especially if you’re willing to share!)
- background checks and the various services available,
- standard operating procedures to avoid potential regulatory pitfalls, and
- Nancy Maher, property manager at Ashley Square, will share info about Ashley Square and how they do things, then lead a Q&A session. What Nancy shares, as a seasoned veteran, will will be worth the price of admission! Bring a guest!
Before the night is over, we will seek a volunteer to host the next meeting, on November 6th — (our intention is to hold this meeting monthly, on the first Tuesday of the month. If you plan to attend, don’t forget to vote!
Location – Clubhouse of Ashley Square, at 5501 Aurora Ave.

Come by and see us!
Andrew & Rebecca Cordle will be here for the Two Rivers REIA meeting on Thursday night, which starts at 6:00 at the HOLIDAY INN, Downtown — 1050 6th Ave. More info on Andrew & Rebecca can be found at www.FinancialMomentum.com
They will also be here on Saturday, Sept 22, from 8:30 – 4:00 for a full-day workshop. Both events are free and open to the public. I have seen Andrew speak before, relating his story, and I can’t wait to introduce him to our ILA and TRREIA members. He has s system worked out with Home Depot for SKU’s to be used in rehab’s and National REIA, Home Depot, and Andrew are perfecting a materials listing system that should be an outstanding time saver. This is cutting edge stuff, for a rehab’er, so … if you’re one of those, this would be a great event to attend!
Hope to see you there!

He has been an economics instructor at Grand View College, testified in State and Federal Court as an expert in property tax valuation and tax policy, and written and published articles regarding property tax issues. He has served on state, national, and international committees and boards relating to property tax and has obtained several professional designations dealing with appraisal theory. 1:15 – 4:00 – Grass Roots Lobbying & Legislative Issues Workshop – Suggested donation to the IARPO-PAC – $10.00 for those who attend.
We’ve been building up for this workshop seemingly all year! Certainly, there are many other aspects of rental property ownership and management that get the lion’s share of our attention. Yet we neglect this aspect of the business at our own peril! If you are a property owner, property manager or industry stakeholder, we want your input for what should be our legislative priorities in 2013. The workshop will be kicked-off by Joe Kelly and Mary Lahay — with Presentations and Q&A. Then we will break into up to five focus groups on several known issues, and seek input for additional ideas. We may engage in some legislative drafting and some detailed reviews. Out of this, we hope to find “Issues Captains” and “District Captains”. Come prepared to present your concerns!
On Sept 11, at 6:00 PM — The Southeast Iowa Property Owners Association (SEIPO), and their director, Marc Gillette, held their monthly meeting at “The Drake”, 106 Washington Street in Burlington.
Many of the members of this group are members of the Iowa Landlord Association (ILA) and/or Two Rivers REIA of Central Iowa, and can have access to the CIC Reports from Contemporary Information systems. This is our top notch tenant screening system for background checks on Credit, evictions (nationwide), and criminal checks — for which ILA has an exclusive relationship. This is what we demonstrated on Sept 11.
SEIPO members have been exploring options for affiliation with a larger, statewide group of Rental Property Owners and managers for several months. We have enjoyed getting to know this group and the local issues there in Burlington. Many of you have joined the ILA, to make sure you are part of the statewide efforts to protect the interests of rental property owners in ALL communities.
If you know a rental property owner/manager from Burlington, Muscatine, Ft. Madision, Wapello, New London, Mediapolis, or beyond — they may want to be at this meeting!
Tuesday night, we’ll brought our story about why affiliation with IaREIA (ILA + Two Rivers REIA) is the right choice for SEIPO and their members!
